Airline Flight Attendants

Flight attendants are mainly appointed to accommodate and ensure the safety of people traveling on a flight. Comfort and entertainment are secondary to safety, and that is why before taking off, flight attendants explain safety procedures in the event of an emergency. Should there be an emergency, flight attendants are trained to step in and give guidance to patients about where to exit the plane, where life jackets or floats are located and how to exit the plane. At least one hour before the flight, attendants are briefed by the pilot on emergency evacuation procedures, coordination of the crew, the length of the flight, expected weather conditions, and special issues having to do with passengers. Flight attendants always make sure that first aid kit and other essential equipment are on board and in working condition. They also make sure there are adequate supplies of food and beverages and any other provided amenities.

The moment the passengers enter the plane, the attendants greet them, check their tickets and guide them to their seat and help them store their luggage. Before the flight takes off, the attendants check seat belts to make sure that they are fastened. Seat backs are in upright position, and all carry-on items are properly stored.

Because airlines work around the clock and year round, flight attendants rotate night shifts, holidays and weekends. They belong to the Association of Flight Attendants and are medically covered for injuries and emotional stress. One advantage to being a flight attendant is that air travel is practically (if not entirely) free and destinations are limitless.
